Brookly in the 1970’s
Above is a photo of what rent control did to Brooklyn. These are buildings that were abandoned because of frozen rents and escalating costs. The landlords walked away and the buildings were not maintained and became uninhabitable.
In the 1970’s I used to drive through this neighborhood both in medical school and during my residency. This photo is typical of what I saw. Whole neighborhoods looked like this.
This is what socialism does. All of the woke liberals need to wake up and understand that there are no such thing as freebees.
Public housing run by NYC is in disrepair and often not kept up to building codes.
Now that rent control is gone buildings in this neighborhood have either been rebuilt or replaced.
We in Connecticut are drifting toward rent regulation and housing regulation. Fortunately the governor vetoed the absurd HB5002 bill that would have led to the destruction of the right of towns through their elected officials to control their own destiny. We also have the fair housing bill that will ultimately lead to rent regulation and control. The best way to preserve rental housing is to make it profitable for landlords to maintain and operate their buildings.
The second and most important solution is for towns to make a concerted effort to reduce the regulatory burdens and thereby lower the cost to build affordable housing.
Companies need affordable housing for their workers to live in. Otherwise they cannot operate.
There is a societal interest in facilitating the free market to build, preferably owned affordable housing.
It was done on a large scale throughout the country in the post WWII era and can be done today.
College and Universities who receive federal funding and other subsidies need to regain the academic freedom that has been hijacked by woke left wing professors. There should be free and open debate regarding the differences between free market capitalism and government regulated socialism.
But the most important question that needs to be answered is why is there a massive immigration to the United States from people freeing socialist and communist societies if life under those systems are that wonderful. Talk to anyone who has fled these countries and they are in shock that people are voting to transform the US to a society that they fled from.
In 2025 we have municipal elections which will decide who will lead our towns. Every voter who cares about the future of their town, this state and our country must wake up and support candidates who believe in our free market democracy.
If not and socialism takes over this is what housing will look like. Or in the alternative your next door neighbors house could be demolished and replaced with a skyscraper.
Elections count and our future will be decided in the 2025 local elections and the 2026 statewide and federal elections.
NYC is finished
"All of the woke liberals need to wake up and understand that there are no such thing as freebees."
Love ya, Doc but that ain't never gonna happen. To be a liberal means to believe in magical thinking. First and foremost, that socialism is viable and not an idiotic economic/political philosophy that never has - and never can - work because it is inimical to human nature.
